I had an intense fever, and the local people decided only a shaman could heal me. The shaman, who happened to be the next door neighbour, came over, rubbed an egg all over my body, spat aguardiente all over me, blew cigarette smoke in my face, then cracked the egg open, looked at the yolk and decided that some kind of possession had occured as there was a bubble in the yolk (obviously because he had been vigourously rubbing the egg all over my body, but I didn't comment). The shaman announced that "a pregnant women had looked into my eyes and stolen them for her baby" (I've blue eyes - not many of them in Ecuador). He spat some more aguadiente in my face, along with a little more smoke, and told me I'd be better within a couple of days (I was, but doubt it was due to the ritual).
