Latin America is full of luxurious hotels but when it comes to spa hotels and yoga retreats, two destinations clearly stand out - Mexico and Costa Rica. In South America itself, there are very few genuine yoga retreats. For the ultimate relaxing vacation, here’s a few suggestions for those looking for a yoga retreat or spa in Central America.
Hotel Lagunita (Mexico) - set amidst lush rainforest and accessible only by boat, this is a peaceful beach retreat that’s just 40 minutes from Puerto Vallarta on Mexico’s Pacific coast. There are a range of spa treatments such as an aloe vera wrap and sea salt scrub on offer. Other than relaxing, birdwatching, horseback riding, kayaking and fishing are a few other possible activities.
Maroma Resort (Mexico) - The Maroma is a luxury hotel on the Maya Riviera that I regularly used to book for clients when I worked for JLA - I never got any complaints about this fine small spa hotel. It’s a fantastic beach hotel, with an equally excellent spa. The Kinan Spa’s design (Kinan in the Maya word for healing energy of the sun) is based on Mayan sacred geometry and many of the treatments offered are based on ancient Mayan healing practices. Per night, the Maroma resort costs from $510 for a double.
San Blas Yoga Retreats (Mexico) - offer retreats at the off the beaten track Paraiso Miramar Hotel on Mexico’s Pacific coast. There are daily yoga classes in addition to all types of other activitis such as whale watching, hikes and visits to indigenous villages. The San Blas Yoga retreat is north of Puerto Vallarta, and a weeks package costs from $1200, based on double occupancy.
Panacea de la Montana (Costa Rica) - this is an intimate Yoga retreat amidst the mountains of Guanacaste peninsula on the Pacific coast. Panacea is located near to Tamarindo beach where you can participate in more traditional vacation activities such as deep sea fishing, windsurfing and kayaking in addition to relaxing and meditating at this peaceful retreat. Three night packages are from $325 per person, based on double occupancy.
Finca Ipe (Costa Rica) - an organic farm hotel offering meditation packages (as well as internships) close to the small beach town of Dominical, on Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast. Finca Ipe is all about peace and sustainable living.
Samasati Yoga Retreat (Costa Rica) - an exquisite eco resort set amidst tropical rainforest on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coastline (there’s not many upmarket hotels on Costa Rica’s Caribbean - this is one of the few). Whether you’re a nature lover, or keen to relax and practice yoga, this could be a great retreat for you. Other activities include surfing, birdwatching, rainforest tours, visits to indigenous communities, visits to local shamans, horseback riding, rafting and more. Packages cost from $115 per person per day (based on double occupancy).
Sat Yoga Institute (Costa Rica) - offers healing and wellness retreats, seminars and teachings, therapeutic sessions in clinical atmanology, classes in gourmet vegetarian cooking and more. The institution is dedicated to helping all people achieve liberation and enlightenment.
