The one safest way to see the continent is to learn a bit of Spanish (it'll even work in Brazil, if you speak slowly). Speaking Spanish has made it easier for me to navigate situations that might have been a little less smooth than I would have liked.

The rest of your advice is absolutely common sense and applies well beyond Latin America!</description>
