Panama is fast emerging as one of Latin America's hot new tourism destinations. With the widening of the Panama Canal due soon, the country is well on it's way to achieving "developed country" status. No wonder many wealthy Americans are looking to by retirement homes in Panama these days. There's great beaches at Bocas del Toro and the Pearl Islands. Less visited are the San Blas Islands, a semi autonomous region governed by the Kuna Indians. Panama City is very modern and a great base for tours to the Panama Canal, plus there's many rainforest tours available nearby. The more adventurous might consider looking for a rainforest lodge in the Darien region.
